Club for those unaccustomed to speeches
A local club whose members work at getting up and having their say is the Ruapehu International Training in Communication (ITC) group. It is an organisation
formerly known as "Toastmistress", the name being changed in 1984. Its founder was a Mrs Ernestine White who sought to unite speech clubs in parts of the United States under one
parent organisation, with the purpose of clarification of objectives, unification of procedure and promotion of educational interests. The organisation was incorporated in 1938. In 1946 the first Canadian club was formed and in 1969 Australia became the first region outside North America to be established. Great
Britain, New Zealand and South America followed suit in the early 1970's and Japan followed in the early 1980's. The Ruapehu ITC club was originally in Waiouru but was restarted in 1981 by Keitha Journeaux Fay Eves, Valma Littlewood and Margaret Horne. Since then, meetings
are held in Raetihi and Ohakune respectively each fortnight. Jean Windle is the newly elected president of the club. She joined ITC between 1984-85 holding the positions of VP Education (Programme organiser) and Treasurer. Eay Eves is the Club's Secretary and she is one of the original members of the club. She is also editor for the Region's Magazine
"Whai News." Jenny Dekker, who joined in 1988, is Treasurer and Leigh Berry, who joined in 1987 is the programme organiser. She allocates each member a job in the speaking programme which is usually held- after the business session of the meetings. The club has a membership of 16 people and each has a contribution to make.
Future activities will be the prepared. speeches to be held in Raetihi on 9 November. The duration shall be 5-7 minutes with people from outside the region judging. On 15 December the first round of the region's debate competitions will be held. The moot is "that lacy lingerie leads to love." Visitors are always welcome. Jefferine O'Sullivan
