Trout season kicks off

Anglers have been eagerly awaiting October and the opening of the '89-90 trout fishing season in many of these latter lakes and streams. Within the Taupo fishing district Lake Otamangakau should attract a number of devotees keen to find out whether a release of two different strains of rainbow trout two years ago have continued the excellent growth made

up until the end of last season. Already the lake produces several fish over 5kg weight each year, but anglers are hoping the new season will see even greater numbers of trophy fish. The other Taupo fishery water to open on Sunday is Lake Kuratau and the Kuratau River upstream of the hydro dam. This underutilised fishery can provide good catches of smaller rainbow trout.
