No money, no Nepal

BY

No money no trip! That's the situation facing Waimarino students Ray Charles Herewini, Caleb Dempsey, and Karina Meyer if $15,000 can't be raised. The three students have been selected along with 17 other young New Zealanders to participate in a six week expedition for "Youth to Everest." Their objective is to clean up operations of Everest Base Camp and involve themselves in community projects such as the building of toilets, hospitals and/or a school house. The group of students must raise $5000 each from community work, sponsorship and fundraising. The college will assist with one fundraising event, but most will have to come from their own pockets. The students feel it is important to tell the community that they

need to find work desperately, and through hard work they will appreciate the effort and support of the Waimarino people. Sponsorship, they feel, is the easier way out. To Ray Charles, Caleb and Karina this trip will be a chance of a lifetime. They know the challenge of the Himalayas and that the experience alone will be an enormous plus in their lives. They emphasis that not everybody gets a chance like this so young in life and Call out to the community to help with any ideas for fundraising or work plans. A small committee with parent support will be formed to establish a foundation for the fundraising. Chimney fire The Raetihi Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a chimney fire at Horopito on Saturday 30 September. The fire was attended by six firefighters at approximately 6.07pm.
