Prisoners weed
Inmates from the Tongariro Prison Farm's Corrective Training Institute are assisting the Department of Conservation with control of noxious weeds within reserve land next to the Tongariro River. A gang of up to 10 men have been releasing native shrubs planted during the early 1980's, from the 'forest' of broom which has
grown up around them. In other areas of the reserve several hectares of broom adorn the banks of the Tongariro River, but there is little point in cutting or spraying these areas if native plants are not already present or cannot be established where the vegetation is dominated by weed species such as broom and buddleah.
