Council says no to rural worker subdivision

The definition of a rural worker became the sticking point in a subdivision application for the Waimarino district Council recently. Mr Tony McMillan applied to subdivide a property at the intersection of Lakes Road and State Highway 49. The land is in two parcels separated by a narrow strip of different ownership. One of the parcels contains a new log house. Town Planner Ted Fox told the council the proposal conformed to the new rural zone provided the land was used for rural workers' accommodation. Cr Dave Griffiths said

he saw the application using a loophole in the scheme, and Cr Bruce Thompson said approving the subdivision, would be defeating the purpose of the plan. Mr Fox said the scheme doesn't say what a rural worker is or when a rural worker has to live there. Councillors heard that

Mr McMillan worked for Turoa Skifields and discussed whether he was a "rural worker". Cr Griffiths moved the application be declined and his motion was carried. The reason given was that the application does not comply with the scheme.
