Railways subdivision approved
Approval for the subdivision of Railways land in Ruapehu Road, Ohakune was given by the the Waimarino District Council last week. The application was to subdivide into separate lots the land on which 13 railway houses are sited and continue the existing residential use. Conditions imposed on allowing the subdivision were that a scheme plan be submitted to the council, that the street be upgraded to normal council urban standards and that the 150mm earthenware sewer pipe serving the houses which runs through the sections remain a private sewer and that easements be provided to allow access to the pipe for maintenance. Alternatively Railways can relocate the sewer onto council land and hand over maintenance responsibility. No objections to the subdivision were received. Projects manager for Railways Properties Ronald Elton told the council the previous plan to develop a ski ?nd holiday village on the site would be most unlikely to proceed, not because of the conditions placed on the approval for that scheme, but because of other factors such as the downtum in the market for skier accommodation and the sale of railway houses which were to be used for the project.
No new house lots are created by the subdivision and the row of houses have been in existence for 65 years. Because of the age of the development no reserves contribution was sought by the council. Railways plan to offer the houses and land to their occupants and/or put them on the open market.
