Fire fighters battle on skis

A ski race meeting of a very different type starts this week - the first ever New Zealand Fire Fighters' Ski Championships hosted by the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The racing starts this Thursday with a giant slalom, weather permitting, and on Friday, a dual slalom will be run. For non-skiing fire fighters a ski bike race will be held with times achieved contributing to the team effort of tho.se brigades taking part. Both volunteer and professional fire fighters are taking part in this social event, with 64 competitors making up 16 teams.

The teams will be competing for numerous prizes donated by a huge host of sponsors plus a trophy donated by Rothmans New Zealand Ltd. Acronyms have been part of the fun for some. Team names include "The Ultimate Racing Dudes", "Firefighters (Auckland) Racing Team", "Champion Racing Auckland Personnel" and "The Invincible Top Skiers".
