BEATING FIRES TO IT

Our local fire brigades are a switched on bunch, everybody knows that. But the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade were way ahead last week - they got to a fire five minutes before the fire was there! The boys and girls raced to the fire station (dropping their world famous doughnuts, kitchen sinks, bank statements and checkout lists, etc), roared up to the Junction Railway Station and ran out their hoses, but couldn't see what to point them at. "Where's the fire," asked a little flicker. "Oh, it's on its way," said a Railways man. The fire was on board a diesel locomotive on its way from Horopito to Ohakune and the driver had decided to book his brigade call-out in advance!
