Art awards reiuvenated
"A greater vitality and vibrancy" in artworks greeted Ohakune Art Awards organisers and supporters this year, according to patron Bill Taylor.
He said the increased interest from young artists in the awards was partly responsible for that improvement and that the committee and conveners intend to encourage young artist participation. This year they have done so by offering two additional awards to young artists. Last year there were 101 entries in the awards, which almost doubled this year to 185. The art exhibition started last Sunday and the last chance for art lovers to see the works is today and tomorrow, Saturday 9 September. The premier award went to Pat McGovern of Havelock North for her paintings "Business Houses" and "Just Looking" which are brightly coloured acrylic on canvas paintings that have been folded and gathered, rather than stretched conventionally flat. Jason Holland of Hastings took the Barnes Young Artists Award for his mixed media works, "Jason's Experience" and "Having a Head Injury". Two Merit Barnes Young Artist Awards were presented. One to Tania Turei of Palmerston North for her acrylic painting "Rough Diamond" which is mounted in an old, cracked window frame. The other was awarded to Patrick Minhinnick from Turangi for his pencil drawing "Homestead". Bev Kerr was presented ihe Waimarino District Award for local
artists for her oil painting "Whakapapanui". Maureen Thirtle of Turn page 2
