The Queen's Baton will be carried up and over Mt Ruapehu next January on its way around the North Island to the Commonwealth Games in Auckland. On January 15 relay runners will carry the North Island half of the baton (the other half will be carried around the South Island) from New Plymouth to Taumarunui, Ohakune then Waiouru. The following day runners will take it up Mt Ruapehu, across to Tokaanu, Taupo then Tc Kuiti. Escorting the Queen's baton runner will be one carrying the Pride of New Zealand Baton and one carrying the Spirit of New Zealand baton. 7000 runners will carry the three batons around the North Island.
