Top season for Navy rugby
The Irirangi Senior Reserve rugby team completed a successful season on Saturday by winning the McKee Cup.
The McKee Cup is challenged at the end of each season by the winners of the seriior reserve competition in northern Wanganui sub union and Wanganui. This year the challengers were Irirangi and Ratana. The first 25 minutes of the game saw both teams fired up and looking for weaknesses to exploit. In the 29th minute Ratana intercepted a pass and headed 60 metres down the field only to be stopped by a fortunate tackle.
The 33rd minute saw Rob Barclay convert his own try after being fed the ball by Steve Vine from a scrum just outside the Ratana 22. The score remained unchanged at 6-nil through to half time. The half time break saw Jim Ward firing the Iri-* rangi team up and reminding them of their unbeaten record at. home. Fourteen minutes into the second half Rob Barclay was successful with a penalty making the score Irirangi 9,
Ratana 0. More solid play followed and Ratana were unlucky not to convert some fine attacking moves to points. Darby Allen drew next blood with a try in the corner after Irirangi won a line out. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, with Irirangi 13, Ratana 0. This remained the final score, and ended the most successful season for Irirangi. The team has this season won the McKee Cup, Robert Cleaver Shield, Ken McLean Cup, TRSU Championship Cup, The Wini-
ata Cup and Cribb Shield. Irirangi Rugby Club would like to thank all their sponsors and look forward to their support in the 1990 season.
