Deadine for 1990 list
The New Zealand 1990 Commission is urging organisers of events for the year to register them as soon as possible so they can be listed in the official 1990 events calendar.
Groups have only three weeks left to notify the Commission of their projects to ensure they will be included in the full listing of events that will be used to publicise the year within New Zealand and internationally. Any events not registered with the Commission's offices by 15 September won't be able to be included in the calendar to go on public sale until an update is published next year. Late events will also mean regions will miss out on domestic and international tourism promotion opportunities based around distribution of the first official calendar of New Zealand 1990 events. The Commission's regional co-ordinator for the central region, David Naylor, said today that many people are so busy throughout the country organising events for next year that they have forgotten to register their details with the Commission. "Many community groups, clubs and other I organisations also have; annual events which in
themselves contribute to the year's objectives. "The year is about reflecting on our character and identity and that's what many regular community events highlight. Organisers should contact the Commission urgently regarding their events so they can be officially included and to see what can be added to them especially for New Zealand's anniversary year," Mr Naylor said. "Only events registered with the Commission are included in the official calendar and then promoted in New Zealand and overseas. Registered events can also use the official New Zealand 1990 project logo in their publicity to show that they are part of the year and contributing to its objectives." The main edition of the New Zealand 1990 National Calendar of Events will go on public sale nationwide in November. It will be distributed throughout the world to meet the increasing level of international tourist interest in the year and to assist those planning associated 1990 travel packages. Over the last two months, events registered with the Commission have nearly doubled to more than 2,200. Local sporting events, community fes-
tivals, school fetes, reunions, inter-cultural events, open marae days, street parties.i historical walks,; community concerts and plays have all been added. "New Zealand 1990 is particularly about community activities and events that are so much part of our way of life. It will be especially disappointing then if many of these miss out on the opportunity to be recognised as part of New Zealand's anniversary year," Mr Naylor said. These are the Southem Ruapehu events currently registered with the 1990 Commission for inclusion in their official calendar. 17-18 February, 1990 Waimarino A and P Show at the Raetihi Showgrounds; 10 March, Desert Fair at Waiouru; 4 June, Era Dance/Family Social, at Raetihi; 16 August, Ohakune New World Commemorative Cycle Race; 20-22 October, 1990 Sing Aotearoa -
The Ohakune Odyssey', Ohakune. The objectives for New Zealand 1990 aim at participation by all New Zealanders in the year to highlight the natural advantages of the nation, increase cultural understanding, improve harmony, goodwill, tolerance and the quality of life, ensure greater understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, forge new opportunities for sharing and partnership, promote thing and planning for the next 50 years. If you are involved in any event next year, large or small, that contributes to these objectives, contact the Commission urgently in Wellington register it as part of New Zealand's anniversary year so it can be included in time for the official New Zealand 1990 Events Calendar.
