$60 annual Park hut pass offered

Trampers will be able to buy annual passes for staying in Department of Conservation huts from October.

Passes will cost $60 and will allow trampers to use category two, three and four huts, as well as camp outside

huts, without further charge. Without a pass category two huts cost $8 per night and category three cost $4. In the review of hut fees DoC has decided to absorb the extra GST and keep hut fees at last year's prices, though the 10 per cent discount for 15 tickets or more is dropped. It's not clear yet but the review may see the John Coull Hut on the Wanganui River reduced from a category One hut to a category two, which would mean a drop in price from $12 to $8. In announcing the new pass DoC listed all category one huts, which are to be exempt from the pass, but the list did not include the

John Coull hut. The Wanganui River hut is the only $12 one

in the North Island and has a top grade because it has gas cooking.
