ROAD OPENING? CALL THE PROFESSIONALS
Department of Conservation staff are offering a new service to road openers. Conservation officers are now trained to speedily set up ribbons across roads for official openings. Demonstrating their new skill last weekend were Ohakune ranger Lisle Irwin and a DoC colleague, who sprinted across the Bruce Road ready for Conservation Minister Phillip Woollaston's road opening photo -oportunity. The pair made the event possible despite the fact that the road was not actually closed to the many skiers who raced past the road-side ceremony with the tongues hanging out looking up at Whakapapa's shining slopes. They also resisted the tempation to sprint through the ribbon with arms held high, though of course it would have been difficult whilst actually holding the ribbon. Rumours the pair have been searching for designer "road opener" steriods are largely unfounded.
