Rural brigades studied

BY

DONNA

MCGRATH

Raetihi and Ohakune fire fighters joined forces on Tuesday night in an exercise under the supervision of assistant Fire Commander Kevin Smith, and Senior Station Officer Ken Malcolms of Wanganui Headquarters. The exercise dealt with a structural fire, a chemical spillage and a two-vehicle road accident. All three incidents took place at the one time and three fire engines and an ambulance attended the scene. Ambulance staff worked along with fire fighters carrying out first aid procedures for shock, chest and head injuries. Water was drafted from a nearby

creek by a portable pump to the fire and accident. The fire fighters dealt with the chemical spillage and had to wear specialised suits and breathing apparatus equipment. Afterwards ambulance staff, instructors, victims and fire fighters discussed the exercise which Mr Malcolms said was over all, "well done." Mr Smith praised the brigades on the efficient pump work carried out during the exercise, an important part of rural fire fighting. Wanganui Headquarters Instructors will continue to carry out such exercises within the Wanganui area to test and to become more aware of the workmanship and efficiency of district brigades.
