Lack of yard use worries farmers

BY

DONNA

. MCGRATH

Some local farmers have expressed concern at the possible closure of the Raetihi Saleyards.

There have been no yard saies for two and a half months in Raetihi and local stock is being directed to Fordell or neighbouring yards - the cost being borne by the farmer. They question the future outlook of the yards if this is to continue. Wrightson Representative Bernie McGahan said last week that he has no information from Wrightson directors leading to a decision that the saleyards will close. He says he

is confident of this but stresses that farmers must support the yards to get the saies here. If the stock numbers are too low to hold a sale here, agents are forced to sell their client's stock at Fordell, he said. At present, large numbers of stock are being sold in the paddock, short circuiting the auction system. Elders Representative Jerry Trebilcock supports Mr McGahan's Turnpage 3
