EXTRA DOLLAR SPARKS ELECTRICITY GRIPES

King Country Electric Power Board phones ran red hot with complaints after sending out accounts for electricity used in June. Because the accounts went out after 1 July they incurred an extra 2.5 per cent GST, which upset a number of domestic users, bitter about the "principal of the thing". General Manager Peter Till said the Inland Revenue Department's rules meant that accounts sent in July had to have the new GST rate added, despite the service being delivered earlier. He also said the staff weren't available to send out June accounts earlier and if they were, there would be extra costs to pass on to consumers. He said the average domestic bill would have been $1 to $2 extra and pointed out that the extra goes to the Government.
