Two people were buried in an avalanche in the Ruapehu Crater area at 11.50am Saturday. They and two companions were involved in the slide, which was a 140 metre long, 70 metre wide soft snow slab avalanche. The two men were buried a few inches under the snow and managed to dig themselves out. None of the party suffered serious injury. The avalanche was on a 30-40 degree slope inside the crater area below Tahurangi, which Turnpage 2

Senior Conservation Officer Graeme Ayers was in the area and saw the slide and arranged helicopter pilots Jim Reed and Keith McKenzie to be on standby. He said it took him about 30 minutes to reach the site, to find that there was no one missing and no injuries. The party made their own way down the mountain. Mr Ayers said the avalanche had life threatening potential and that it was a reminder of the need for caution when back country skiing on Mt Ruapehu.
