Whakapapa skiing now in full swing
"Magnificent" weather and "near-perfect" snow conditions greeted skiers at Whakapapa on their opening weekend, according to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Scott Lee. The Skifield opened for business last Wednesday, 19 July and about 200 skiers took to the slopes. The Valley T Bar and Cinder Track Platter were open for limited skiing on the day. Fresh snow on Thursday and Friday saw trail conditions improve and on Saturday and Sunday the Valley, Knoll Ridge, Waterfall T Bars were operating as well as the Cinder Track Platter and Hutt Flat tow Number One. Snow conditions were hard packed on trail and wind packed off trail. Scott Lee said about 5000 skiers took to the Whakapapa slopes over the two days. He said Whakapapa usually opened mid-July and so last Thursday was only about a week late. Last week there was a 62 centimetre base on the upper field. Next weekend will see the official opening of the new West Ridge Quad Chairlift and the realigned and comTpletely sealed Bruce Road. The skifield company has arranged a Champagne breakfast for Sunday, at the Top O' the Bruce, 8-9am, to celebrate the openings.
