Best U19's Rugby display yet
Ghakune-Karioi under 19's played Kaierau at Ohakune with heavy early morning rain and a very wet field and it appeared the game would be usual wet weather struggle. Ohakune-Karioi went onto the field with the right approach and after five minutes half back Simion Nepe made a break from a scrum and passed to right wing Eugene Wilson. With his path blocked he chip kicked over the opposition then turned on the speed to make the touch down just inside the dead ball line. Ohakune-Karioi forwards and backs put their minds to the job and for the next 20 minutes saw the best display of rugby seen this year. The forwards won the tall at will from scrum and lineout. This was
dispersed to the backs who in turn spun the ball out wide. Tries were to follow with two from Richard Hamlin. Jason Haitana scored the try of the match after the ball was passed with speed to the wing, back into the forwards then out again to the wing. R Hamlin was on hand again to score by the posts to bring half time score to 26-nil. A good kick off to the second half saw Ohakune-Karioi back into the action. Kaierau were being taken apart in the set pieces and it was only a matter of time for more points to come. Bryan Mason scored from a lineout to follow with a try by Neil Fredricksen after a pick-up from the back of the scrum from No 8 R Hamlin. From a lineout deep in Ohakune-Karioi
territory R Hamlin tapped down to Michael Wills who, with a fine run, straightened up play and passed to Shane Philips to run the last 25 metres for a try by the posts. Over-use of good ball won by Ohakune-Karioi saw too much ball run by the back-row and back into the forwards with the backs left out of play. Hamish Lowe scored after some close driving near the Kaierau line. The ball was at last swung to the backs with Paul Jones making a break passing on to Dallas Waara to R Hamlin to score his fifth try of the day, making the final score 54-nil. Richard Hamlin was named player of the day. Ohakune-Karioi with two more wins to seal the combined Wanganui competition, play Wanganui Pirates at Ohakune next Sajturday.
