CHATEAU TO JOIN WHAKAPAPA ON SIGN
The National Roads Board sign at the Whakapapa/Chateau turn off will soon carry both names. The board had received complaints from a rival accommodation business that the sign, which pointed to Chateau only, gave the Tourist Hotel Corporation run business an unfair advertising advantage. The official name for the area is Whakapapa Village. The Board decided to leave "Chateau" on the sign because of its tourist appeal.
