SHUTTLE FOR AMOROUS OTAMANGAKAU TROUT

Almost 50 Lake Otamangakau trout were caught and released into the Wanganui River Headwaters to spawn Monday last week. Every year fish congregate around a concrete box. like structure near a tunnel outfall on the lake which they are unable to pass to get to the river, so for the past three years DoC staff have been capturing and releasing the fish to help them on their way. DoC staff say so far they can't tell if the fish stay in the headwaters and spawn or just drop back into the lake. About 12 people were involved in last week's capture which saw trout up to four kilograms. Electricorp co-operation is necessary for the task as the water flow is temporarily stopped to allow staff to enter the water to catch the fish. Once the water flow is stopped pumps are used to lower the water level and nets are used to capture the trout. A tanker is used to transport the trout to the release point.
