Carry radios to avoid mishaps
Ihe Waimarino Search and Rescue committee is well on its way to raising money for new equipment.
The three hand-held high frequency radios have already been put to use in the field, according to Graeme Brebner, district co-or-dinator for the region. Waimarino Search and Rescuers were involved in the search for a young boy lost in bush on Mt Ruapehu last week. The team joined
searchers in the Pureora Forest west of Lake Taupo later in the week, to look for the samq boy who became lost a second time! Such incidents could be avoided if groups and individuals entering the bush chrried portable radios, according to Mr Brebner. A keen hunter, he said he
dosen't go anywher^ without first packing his own hand-held radio. The Waimarino is a sub-base of Taupo, with 10 portable radios based in Taupo and three in the Waimarino. Fund-raising is also on-going to replace Search and Rescue's base set. Mr Brebner said around $1000 is needed to purchase a second-hand Codan 7727 from a firm in Wanganui. Members of the Waimarino Search and Rescue collected over $200 in donations from the public in Seddon Street, Raetihi last week. Mr Brebner said the response from the community has been excellent. Still further support is needed he said, for the organisation to reach its goal. Businesses, service organisations and members of the public in a position to help with donations can contact Graeme Brebner or Richard Milne at Ruapehu College, or Noel Shepherd.
