WHANGANUI NATIONAL PARK AREA MAY DOUBLE
Whanganui National Park could double in size if adjacent land currently under scrutiny is added. Pockets of adjacent land adding up to 80,000 hectares, owned by the Crown and administered by the Department of Conservation will be studied by DoC at the instigation of the National Parks and Reserves Authority. The case for the land's inclusion has been put forward by the Wellington and Taranaki National Parks and Reserves boards. The investigation is expected to take several years and covers parcels of land mostly on the Taranaki side of the river, varying in size from just two hectares to 15,000. The first petition to increase the size of the park came form the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society in April 1988. The society was concerned at that stage that the new state owned enterprises would be allocated much of the land.
