Ambulance volunteers

Volunteers may soon be responsible for running the Whakapapa and National Park area ambulance. The ambulance is currently owned and operated by the Department of Conservation, who want to see it taken over by National Park people, possibly forming an incorporated society, and a number of volunteers, many of whom are volunteer firemen have offered their services. The vehicle is a 1979 four wheel drive ambulance, which DoC says they are prepared to hand over to a local group to manage. The ambulance would be housed next to the National Park fire station. The Taumarunui Hos-

pital Board would be responsible for to cost of transporting patients from the National Park/Whakapapa area as well as coritributing to depreciation costs.
