POLICE WARN TRAMPERS ABOUT CARPARK ATTACKS

Police have issued a waming to trampers that if they leave their vehicles in remote areas while on treks they run the risk of vandalism or theft. The waming from Taihape police follows recent incidents in Tongariro National Park, one where a car parked at the Waihohonu Track carpark was broken into. The car's battery and tool kit and a tyre were stolen. Another incident involved a car parked at the Blyth Hut track on the Ohakune Mountain Road. The car was vandalised sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Door panels were smashed in, the front and rear windows were smashed and both front tyres were removed.
