NO DECISION MADE ON SKIFIELD EXTENSION

The final decision on whether the Whakapapa Skifield should be extended will be made by the Minister of Conservation, Phillip Woollaston, it was announced at a meeting of the National Parks and Reserve Authority last week. The Department of Conservation is concerned that Ruapehu Alpine Lifts' plans to install a chairlift extending to 2365m would have too great an impact on Mt Ruapehu. RAL want to utilise the field's upper slopes, taking advantage of better skiing conditions and lengthening the season. It is not known when Mr Woollaston will reach a decision on the matter.
