Animals' rights defended
I am shocked, sickened and dismayed
by the way some people treat animals. It is heart-breaking, during any school holiday break, to hear of the dozens of cases of cruelty towards 'loved' household pets. It is inconceivable that a family can leave a cat, dog, bird or any other animal, without food or water while they take a two-week holiday. This happens all the time - just pick up any newspaper or ring the local SPCA - they are the poor devils that have to pick up the sad remains of some animal that has been left to starve to death while the owner is having a ball in another part of the country. The Waimarino is not without these pet owners who don't deserve to own a pet. I have heard of, and seen for myself, some pitiful incidents involving dogs tied up without water for a week; kittens shut in a wood shed, because the owners were afraid they would wander - it didn't occur to them that they might starve to death before then. When will people ever learn that animals have needs and rights too. To treat animals the way that some people do, is just plain heartless. There are a countless number of ways we humans inflict pain and suffering on animals. It isn't fair.
