Another win for Bobcats

As seems to be the norm with away games "Waiouru Premiers were understrength, when they played Fielding on May 6, having five players in the side who were playing their first game in the Premiers.

Waiouru started strongly with rugged loose forward Shag Brennan scoi;ing a try which was converted by Sonny Tawake. Soon after Phil Hardwick was knocked out and replaced by Dennis Hall. Fielding soon put points on the board with a penalty and soon after a series of four penalties in a row put them hot on attack and they scored a converted try giving Fielding the lead 8-6. An injury to Sonny Tawake saw him replaced by Jake Elwood. With halftime approaching Terence Hiko running off Ben Poaching set up a break for Jock MacCauley. A quick play close to the line saw Shag Brennan force his way over for his second try, which

was converted by Rugby Union convert Dave Maclntosh who had taken over the kicking duties. Leading 12-8 at the break Waiouru came out strong and in the second minute of the second half big Ben Poaching cut the defence to ribbons and scored under the posts. From then on it was all one way traffic with Waiouru winning every scrum, backs and forwards running at will and only staunch defence by Fielding stopped the Bobcats from running up a cricket score. With tries to Jake Elwood and Dave Maclntosh, Waiouru raced away to a 28-8 lead. A late consolation try to Fielding made the final score 28-12.

The score flattered Fielding as Waiouru had 70 per cent of possession of the ball. However, this was affected by the penalty count which was 15-3 against Waiouru. Tom McDaniel, Dave Maclntosh, Dennis Hall and Jake Elwood had good games for their first outing, others to shine in the forwards were Kendall Gupwell, Dennis Murray and Shag Brennan and, in the \>acks, Monty Williams, Frank Smith and Jock MacCauley. Draw: Saturday May 20, Waiouru v's Wanganui at Waiouru, 2.45pm; Saturday May 27, Waiouru v's Leyin at Linton, 2.45pm. Army team games here in Waiouru: Tuesday May 16 1930 hrs Waiouru v's Manawatu; Sunday May 21 1430 . hrs Waiouru v's NZ Universities.
