AN AVERAGE GAME SEASON START

Opening weekend of the Waimarino game season was "average in comparison with other years," said DoC officer John Heaphy. Field checks by John showed that 1.12 ducks per hour were bagged in comparison to 1.2 per hour in 1988. He said the weather wasn't generally conducive to a good shoot and numbers of paradise appeared similar to last year but mallard and grey duck were down slightly. "Hunters were generally well behaved which is always nice to see," said Mr Heaphy "Please keep your eye open for the rest of the season for grey teal ducks as these are protected," he asks hunters. He also urges hunters to make the most of the season as there are lots of paradise ducks around and that data shows that last season the period after opening weekend shot better than the weekend itself.
