Transport soldier receives award

BY

MYRA

MACGIBBON

During a recent visit to Waiouru Major General Meldrum, performed a presentation of a special commendation to Warrant Officer Class Two Grant Leslie Child of the Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport.

W02 Child has served with the New Zealand Army for some seventeen years and is currently the Corp's senior technical instructor in mechanical transport at the School of Transport and Catering in Waiouru. W02 Child has been singled out in the past for favourable comment because of his outstanding qualities and professionalism not only from the Army but also the Ministry of Transport and other civilian transport organisation such as the Defensive Driving Council. He was a member of the driver training team

which was deployed to the Sinai in 1983. His duties there included organising the training material, conducting courses and establishing driving maintenance standards for the drivers. His efforts were significant to the overall success of the team. During 1984/5 W02 Child took on the task of writing a user handbook for the new range of the Army's General Service 'B' vehicles. From November 1987 to Februa^ 1988 W02 Child assisted the New Zealand Road Transport Industry Training Board and the Ministry of Transport to conduct

six courses throughout the country for commercial driving instructors following the introduction of the threetiered licence regulations. He assisted not only with the course presentations but also the testing phases. It is due to his involvement in both these organisations that good relationships now exist between the NZ Army, the road transport industry and the Ministry of Transport. W02 Child has demonstrated dedication to his trade, Corps and to the Army in the manner in which he has carried out his duties, often with considerable personal sacrifice. His achievements, particularly over the last five years have been a credit to the NZ Army such that the special regulation was warranted.
