Mr & Mrs Jones farewelled

Gavin and Paddy Jones who are leaving the district for Whangamata, were farewelled at a Rotary meeting last Wednesday, May 3.

Rotary members, their wives and many business people, farmers and friends who have been associated with the Joneses were present. Over 50 people attended and a presentation was made on behalf of Rotary and the district by Bill Peahc who spoke of the immense amount of work Gavin had put in for the district and Rotary ably supported by Paddy. Gavin was President of the Rotary Club for a two year term and served on all the various Rotary committees. All those present signed the back of a painting by Harry

Sangl of Mt Ruapehu painted from the Mountain Road. Past County Chairman, Bruce Berry, commented on the amount of work Gavin had put in over the years on behalf of the County, saying that Gavin should take credit for the work that had been achieved. The present District Council Mayor, Garrick Workman, echoed Bruce's thoughts and said that Gavin had been a champion for the County's cause when the amalgamation was thrashed out and put in place. He stated that the County residents had a lot to thank

Gavin for. The President of Rotary, Hira Parata spoke of the vast amount of work Gavin had put in for the Rotary district regarding Australian 'Matched Twin' exchanges. Hira stated that Gavin had put in countless hours and travelled many kilometres to attend meetings. Past President Tony Mosaed also echoed the

thanks to Gavin and Paddy for all they had done for the district. Val Littlewood thanked Paddy for all the work she had done for the Church in looking after the Opportunity Shop and her help with the Community Advisory Service. She stated that Paddy would be very hard to replace and her leaving was a

great loss to the district. Although the farewell was tinged with sadness, everybody enjoyed the opportunity to wish Paddy and Gavin all the very best for the future in Whangamata. It is hoped they will pass back through the district and visit their many friends from time to time.
