Children of Form 2 at Waiouru Primary School were given a lecture on Wednesday April 19 about the abuse of alcohol and drugs.
This talk was given by Mr Terry Sarten from the Area Health Board who is the community adviser on drug and alcohol abuse. It started with a talk on the unseen side effects
of alcohol and drugs not only on the person taking them but also on other people. Such topics as drinking and driving, the behavioral changes which can take place,
and the residual effects of some drugs on the body, were covered in the lecture. Questions asked of the children were: what would you call intoxification; what are some of the drugs available to people?; write the word that comes to mind when you think of addiction; and do you Turn page 6

From page 5 think that having warning labels like those on cigarettes would be a good idea for alcohol? The children's answers showed that they were aware of more things than one would have thought of 12 and 13 year old children. They not only came up with the usual names of drugs but also those available on prescription and caffeine. They were divided on the issue of warning labels on alcohol, some thought that no-one would take any notice of them anyway. The afternoon ended with a video by McPhail and Gadsby entitled "With Us All The Way", in which they were shown the part alcohol plays in the lives of everyday people.
