WATER RIGHT QUERY HOLDS UP POWER BUY
King Country Electric Power Board's takeover of Taumarunui Energy, the suppliers of electricity to Taumarunui Borough, was stalled last week over a water right. The Board found that it was unable to get proper proof from the Taumarunui Borough Council that it had a water right for the Piriaka Power Station on the Wanganui River. Because the station was worth $450,000 per year the water right is a very important issue, says the Board. A verbal agreement made in 1967 and a slip of paper giving the Borough permission to generate power was the only proof available of any kind of water right.
