Raetihi rally winner

Wellington's Mark Jennings has privisionally won the AC Delco Rally in the Raetihi area, the first round of the central region rally championship.

Jennings and codriver Jim Robb, in an

untried Toyota Celica four-wheel drive, finished just 13 seconds ahead of Hamilton crew Ken and Greg Adamson in another four-wheel drive car, a Mazda 323. The Adamsons bought the car a couple of weeks ago, and it was their first event in it. More than 50 teams started the rally but after the 150 kilometres of special stages, about a third had fallen by the wayside. Among the leading retirements were Taupo's Peter Grimmer, Bruce Herbert, from Dannevirke, and Wellingtonian Joe McAndrew. The rally was held in fine conditions on relatively smooth roads, but some drivers had trouble with dust and the high speeds encountered.
