OPOSSUM POISONING AIR DROP TO START TODAY

Stage One of the Waimarino Opossum control programme starts today with an air drop of six tonnes of poison pellets. The programme, run by the Western Ward South West North Island Regional Pest Authority, is designed to create a buffer zone to stop the southward spread of bovine tuberculosis which is carried by opossums. Mid-March was the original air drop time but tests on opossums before that showed that only about 30 per cent had taken the bait, The latest tests showed an 86.4 per cent acceptance level.
