Locals get into Rodeo

Weekend cowboys were out in force at the 39th annual Waimarino rodeo recently.

A number of oversea s rodeo cowboys as well as ten local riders - the first to compete in the Waimarino rodeo for 10 years - made up the 100 plus entrants. Many of the ten who tried out at the rodeo last weekend are keen to continue and are practicing each weekend for the next one. Said one local man: "Rodeo riding's better than rugby - that takes 60 minutes to get hurt - this only takes seconds." Inclement weather did not hinder events but rodeo officials reported gate saies to be down on previous years. Major sponsorship was provided by Metropolitan Life, with monetary prizes up for grabs in all divisions. Local businesses also sponsored events, including calf riding for the under 16's, buckjumping, bareback riding, bulldogging and calf roping. Local St John personnel and veterinarians were on hand but were not needed at this year's event. The Waimarino Rodeo Association takes precautions that all stock used in the rodeo are protected from injury. The use of spurs is allowed but they must be taped to stop damage to the horses. About 70 horses are needed for the event and are grazed locally throughout the year. Results were: Second division steer: Dion Coulter (Auckland) 1, M. Sanderson (Warkworth) 2, R.
