Call for locals to mark 1990

Next year is a special milestone year for New Zealand for many people and the 1990 Commission is help-

ing with the formation of a committee to organise activities in this area to mark the year. 1990 marks the

150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi which is the founding document for New Zealand as a nation, according to the Commission. The purpose of a local committee would be to co-ordinate 1990 happenings and liaise with the Commission, says Project Adviser Paula Brettkelly. She said the committee would be compiling a calendar of regular events as well as special ones and would help promote a high level of local involve-

ment in the commemoration of the various events. The regular events could take on the 1990 commemoration theme, says Miss Brettkelly. It can be a time for all sorts of groups and clubs to look at their history, she said, and to look at the history of the area. At least until a committee for this area is formed, Ohakune Librarian Colleen Newton, can be contacted by phoning the Waimarino District Council, phone 58 364.
