Meteorological office closes
Last Friday Waiouru Meteorological Officer John Standish cleared out the office that has been his work place for the last three and a half years. Boxes surrounded him and the office furniture was already on its way to the Gisborne Met Office. The rest of the equipment heads south to Paraparaumu. Waiouru's Meteoro. logical Office has served this area for the last 23 years, assisting both the army and airforce. It is the first fully serviced met office in New Zealand to close. The closure poses a number of questions.
How is this going to affect this area especially in judging the weather for the mountains, search and rescue activities in the area, the air traffic over the central North Island. The Met Office has had an automatic weather station installed, which will provide telex information to the weather bureau. Now the Waiouru weather forecast will come from Ohakea and the meteorological service have given assurances that this service will surfice. John Standish will firstly take an overseas holiday before considering his future.
