OPOSSUM POISONING OKAYED BY COMMITTEE

Approval for the 1080 opossum poisoning programme by the Western Pest Destruction Board has been recommended by the Waimarino Works Committee and accepted by the council. The programme aims to create a buffer zone which includes a large area in the Waimarino to stop the southern migration of TB infected opossums. The committee also recommended to allow the erection of temporary signs warning people of the poison laying. Poisoning will be by air-dropped and ground laid bait. The project will proceed in stages, with the first to cost $198,000, the second (in 1990) to cost $160,000 and the third in 1991.
