Converted car and bicycle

The following cases were heard by Judge Toomey in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. Police Sergeant Russell England of Ohakune appeared for the prosecution and Traffic Officer Mike Lenihan of Waiouru appeared for the Ministry of Transport. Conversion Adam Dominic Stephen Haitana, 22, unemployed of Raetihi, appeared for sentencing on one charge of converting a Torana motor vehicle valued at $3000 on November 12 last year and on one charge of converting a Morrison bicycle valued at $300 on the same date.

Court heard how the motor vehicle which had been taken from the Ohakune Hotel carpark had been 'written off in a subsequent accident and that the bicycle taken from a property on the OhakuneRaetihi road, has since been recovered and retumed to its rightful owner. On the first charge he was convicted and ordered to pay $3000 in reparation with an immediate first payment of $180 followed by weekly payments of $40. He was also placed under supervision for 12 months and ordered to take such alcohol and drug assessment and treatment as directed by his proba-

tion officer during this period. On the second charge he was convicted and sentenced on the same terms as the first charge. No licence Donna Marie Hansen, 29, housewife of Raetihi, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving on State Highway 49 (the Raetihi road) on December 7 last year while never having had a driver's licence at any time. Asked for an explanation, defendant said she had taken the first step towards obtaining a driving licence by getting a copy of the Road Code and intended taking the

test. Judge 'Toomey said that he would adjoum the case until April 20 to see if defendant had obtained a driving licence by then and if she had, she would be convicted and discharged without penalty. Careless use Warren Paul Brown, 19, unemployed carpenter of Rangataua, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle in Miro Street, Ohakune, on February 3. His car had left the road, landed in a ditch and collided with a power pole. He was convicted and fined $150, court costs $65 and disqualified from driving for three months. More details Lynette Cameron, 23, typist of Birkenhead, Auckland, was to have appeared on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle but the case was adjourned until March 23 so that more details could be obtained.
