TANGWAI MEMORIAL TO BE DISCUSSED BY LIONS

Setting up a permanent memorial to the people who died in the Tangiwai Rail Disaster is to be discussed at a meeting this Thursday. Ruapehu Lions as well as Waiouru, Taihape and Hunterville Lions will meet with representatives of the Monumental Masons Association and Radio New Zealand, including 2YA announcer Veronica Allum, to discuss the project. Ruapehu Lion Ian Strachan said the idea had been mooted a long time ago but was close to becoming a reality with the acquisition of land near the old Tangiwai Bridge site and publicity through Radio New Zealand.
