OBITUARY.
GEORGE SHEPPARD WARIN,
On Tuesday evening last at about 7.30, a very old resident in Mr George Sheppard Warm passed away at his residence Warkworth, at the age of 84. On Wednesday general signs of the esteem the deceased gentleman was held in were exhibited in Warkworth and the flags were half-masted on the shipping. Mr Warm was bom. at Easingwold, Yorkshire, and enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich in 1842, and served his country for 14 years, ten of which he served in New South Wales and New Zealand. In 1854 he secured his discharge and re* ceived three months' gratuity for settling in New Zealand, with the credentials of an exemplary character and two good conduct badges with pay. On comifig to New Zealand first Mr Warm fought through the Maori War in the Wairarapa and Wanganui districts, and could entertain one by the hour with many thrilling experiences. After receiving his discharge Mr Warm settled in the Matakana district following the farming industry, but about 30 years ago came to Warkworth and started in business as a saddler, and only retired from active business'two years ago. During his career in Warkworth he was Clerk of the Court, and took a keen interest in school matters. He devoted a lot of time to music and was one of the first to form St. Matthews' Church choir, Auckland. Mr Warm was an enthusiastic cricketer, was a good bat and played many a sterling game for Rodney when that team was at its zenith. He was selected to represent Auckland, and played at Wellington. The deceased leave* a wife, eight sons and two daughter to mourn their loss.
The funeral took place at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Warkworth, on Thursday at 2 o'clock, and the remains of Mr Warm were followed by a large gathering of people to the last resting place. A number of floral designs marked the esteem and respect that Mr Warm was held in.
The funeral serrice was impressively conducted by the Rev. R. McKinney, assisted by Mr E. G. Clements. After the last sacred rites had been performed, Rev. McKinney announced that a . In Memoria-Lj. service would be held at St. Columba Church on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock.
