Correspondence.

The q Viuion& of this j >urnal age open tor the discussion of all subjects bit we do not nsjslarily identify ou*seises with, tfee ouinii-na expressed. fa THE. "EDITOR, t Respected gir,«=l am a struggling settler who has sought, and sought in yftift for worldly honour*, but now, when I had alw*Q6t given up hope there appears a way of aiakiag a name for myself. This chance I am happy to say, has been opened by the committee of the Rodney Agricultural Society. I am the proud 5 possessor of as fine pair of thoroughbred mokes as ever hunted through the fields for a feeds j but am grieved to state that my vehicle is not flash enough to make me confident of gaining first prize in Class 22. with it behind my noble grays. Now Sir, my neighbour j has a handsome turnout, and of course as we are good friends, he would, I think, be only too pleased to lend it for a day or two. Then, with my own two chargers harnessed to my friend's vehicle what is there to prevent my competing for the prize given for Best Settler's Turnout? Perhaps those gentleman who drew up the rules had my distressing case in view, and in their sorrow for my condition wished to give me a chance to write my name on the scroll of heroes who have lived and eat3ii and robbed their fellow creatures from the earliest times; Rule .5 says "All exhibits of produce to be the produce and all live stock, to be the bonafide property of the exhibitor." Now sir, I do not think that a vehicle | can come under the heading of ! " produce," because in such a case it would be necessary for exhibitor to be the maker of his vehicle. Nor do I think a vehicle can be designated as "live stock" I can see nothing in this rule to prevent my using my neighbour's carrage. Rule 15 states "Any person who advertises as plying for hire, shall not be allowed to compete in Class 22." Now if I borrow a vehicle from a friend I fail to see how I can be said to "advertise as plying for hire.'' As far as I can see Rules ' 5 and 15 are the only ones that have any bearing on Class 22. So I cannot see what is to prevent my competing with borrowed vehicle or even borrowed harness, so long as I own the auimals, which is required by Rule five.
