THE ROD NEY & OTAMATEA TIMES AND WAITEMATA & KAIPARA GAZETTE Friday, December 20, 1901.

We heartly reeipfoeate the kindly greetings of our exchangee

Wednesday and Thursday were observed close holidays at Warkworth.

Judging from the number of people in the Warkworth township on Christmas evej, the shopkeepers must Imve had good reason to be satisfied with their enterprise in so libesally catering for seasonable requirements.

The rough wea-her experienced in these parts proved too much for the Auckland Yachting fraternity. About 16 yachts belonging principally to th» Ponsonby Cruising Club^ put into Mahurangi for protection, six of them came up the river to Warkworth viz: the Poneke, Bona, Dutchess, Hinemoa, Spray, and Culalic, The crews were a gentlemanly lot and made a welcome contingent to the Presbyterian Soriee.

Attention is called to the County Council Advertisment re dog registration; also to appointments under the Kauri Gum-Act.

Nominations to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused in the County Council by the resignation of Mr. John Schollm Puhoi, for the Puhoi Riding, are called for not later than 12. noon on Tuesday the 7. of January. Nomination Forms are to be obtained from the Post Office Puhoi or Mr. H. R. French Returning Officer.

The expressions of regret at the resignation of Mr. John Scholium as a membeu of tlie Rodney Council, on account of ill-health were well deseiverl There is no doubt that the Puhoi district will feel his retirement from public life. During our short experience we have received every courtesy and assistance from this gentlemen and we wish him many happy new year's" in his retirement; and hope to see him recovered to his usual good health.

Rodney County lifts not escaped the "Sacking" process of men in Government employ on public works, that has been going on all over the colony. A number of men who have been working on our wads and the Ahuroa rajU way works have been dispenced with to add to the large army of unemploy--ed that the colony will' soon have to i'aac.

The new police regulations to take effect from January 1, are gazetted. They state that every member of the' force shall retire from service on reaching the full age of b's. years.

A large number of employers all over the colony are dismissing boys and girls wholesale rarher than submit to the Factory Act passed last session. An announcement has now been made that this Act will not be brought into force until one year after the piTssiug of the Act. It is very doubtfull if this Act will work in the interests of the workuing class as was the intention The posters for the Church of Eng-

land concert for Thursday 23. are out annoUnding advent of some of the leading amateur talent from Auckland to assist, The proceeds are for the renov^ ation of the church

Among-the ma.hy article* displayed this Xmas at .Warkworth Qne in particular struck fair eye" threo nicely dressed lambs in Mr. Harrison's shop, reminding ns of ihe aid oountry style of dressing, As a sample of a butchers skill, it reflected lnueh credit on Mr. E, Walker, Manger to Mr- Harrison's butchery. We understand that they were purchased by hmi on behalf of Mr. Harrison from My. Mc, Kay, Dome Valley and were certainly a Greditable product of our district.

Standing by a friend the other day I expressed a wish to know which. point was the naff-h, He at once pulled out his watch, looked at it and pointed to tne north, I asked him weather he had a compass attached to his watch. •'All watches" he replied "are compasses." Then he explained how this was. Point the hour hand to the sun, and the south is exactly half way between tlie hour and the figjure twelve on the watch. For instance, suppose that it is four o'clock. Point the hand indicating four to the «un and .wo on on the watch is exactly south. Suppose that it is eight o'cloeK^ point the hand indicating eight to the sun, and the figure ten on the watoli is due south, My friend was quite surprised that I did not know this, but I feel sure thnt many share my ignorance.

Heading sojue papers (lie other day I came across the following- gem, in its way, related of a Melbourne officer of police, who is «aid to be a most Amusing elutracter. When be holds the "flure of the Court** he nerer fails to prove his superiority, w the following instance will show* Ay yer plaise, yer Worships, as I was going along my bate last nighty .about two o'clock this marmii 1.1 saw iji&prieonefr here lying on the broad o''his baok in the gutter dead dhrunk and spaeheless, and in a foiting attitude, and sthating the word "dhrunk" in a lond voice, Get up out o' that, ' says I. He did not answer, ' Get up out o- that,' pays I again,' or I will knock you down? Then with great difficulty I surrounded him, and bore him off to the watch-house.*' The prisoner got Seven days.

Kaipara Flats and Port Albert coirebpondence too late for this issue

The schooner Thistle (Capt T. Jamison) arrived yesterday at Warkworth loaded with bricks for the Rodney County Council.

The D. S. C. Civil Bros, and J. Harrison's shops were quite an attraction to the town with their large stocks of Fancy Goods, chinese lanterns etc,. The fo. S. C. shop was the only one decorated with evergreens. We hope this pleasant old custom is not dying out.

Large numbers of picknic parties made their way to Snells beach and other favourite resorts on New Year's day.

AYe have to acknowledge from the Government" Printer of a copy of the New Zealand Statutes for 1901. It is neatly bound, and creditable to the Government office.

The S. S. Kapanui ran an excursion to the Kawau Island yesterday. The weather was not too promising in the morning, and deterred many intending excursionists taking advantage of the outing. The Presbyterian Church soriee and | concert held on Friday last, was a pro. nounced success, the Hall being full. The programme for the concert was a good one, a number of Auckland talant being a speacial attraction. The RevFath&t Egan being a host in himself.
