day-
Perhaps one of the most commendable amd practical movements that the newly formed Warkworth center of the Farmers Union will have to place to its credit, is its acting upon our instigation to bring the Dairy question to a head within this district. We are pleased to find that many of the leading settlers as they are becoming better informed on the subject, are fast being convinced to our way of thinking viz:— that the dairy industry can be run on profitable lines in this district, if not 'with emminently satisfactory results, At the last meeting of the Union the general expressions of opinion given by practical men who knew what they were talking about, were unanimously favorable to the project, and readily acquiesced in our request to call the public together from all parts of the district, to have a beg "korero" in the Masonic Hall Warkworth; as will be seen by advertisement, this has been done. The next step now, is for everyone who can, to bring themselves and their neighbours, also all the reliable information that they may possess relative to the subject. The low prices ruling for wool at the prensenfAucklank Woolsales, for the present seasons clip following on a consistently yearly decline should make the settlers of this and similarily placed districts who have hitherto pinned their faith to wool and mutton,
! pause and think, Cattle grown for the market are subject to heavy fluctuations, fruil growing though not to be treated ; .slightingij7" takes time to develop and can only utilise a small area of qiu* lands, for extensive .serial crop growing, these lands are not suitable: but, standingout conspiciously above all agricultural pei'snits in this colony is the Pairy Industry, unique, in-as-Miuch that, it commands not only an assured, steady and grooving market for factory-made bu.ter, giving the farmer immediate anc} cash returns, thus placing him master of his own in come and e^penditur-G, but it is enriching him as a side spec" by the eiil;ai].CGd faliie of his landed property.. So it is to this industry that the farmers of this district must naturally look to for the means from wlikh the most of them will, sooner or latsr, be compelled te provide the comforts of their future years or the more pressing needs and responsibilities to those dependent upon them, and we argue with confindence, thq.t the time is now fully ripe to seriously make a beginning, yfe h.^ve no space here to arirue out all the. pros and
of the cous question, bijt we Av«.»uld urge settlers to attend the meeting called for tljis purpose. It is of paramount importance to g-ot together and discuss it over, and we believe the "Korero" will result in something moi'e than mere talk..
