A very successful.social Avas given in the Public Hall on' the 29th. ult. by the crew of ' the' Steamship Rose Casey in aid oi the. Piano, iFiind. pThe Hall wa& tastefully decorated Avith flags, evergreens, aM flowers (side- lights and life-buoys, from the steamer being hung each side of the stage) and when lit up had the appearance of fairyland. The attendance was not so numerous on account of a concert held at- Matakana on the previous evening, but those who did attend, thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. Mrs. Me Curdy, Mrs. and Mr. Sim and Mr. Jos. Greenwood supplied the music for the dancing. Mr. J. Salt performed the duties of M.C, with his iisual ability. Between the dances several songs were sung, Mrs. Me Curdy playing the accompaniments. The following lady and gentlemen eoaitrbtiting items:— Mrs. Sim, MY. Avey, Mr. Whitburn, Mr. Syrae, Mr. E. (ioodwin (ex-trooper), and Mr. H. Yorkington. Mrs. Sim's songs were rendered beautifully and greatly appreciated by all present. Mr.. Avey favoured the ompany with a banjo solo which was a novelty in this district. Mr. Syme contribut< d two comic songs -which f.-tirly brought doAvn the liaise. It is needless to mention the rest of the items, for they were all much appreciated. A very excellent supper Avas providecf at 11 p.m., the tables being laded Avith everything; to satisfy the inner man, Avhile the eA-e Avas gratified by the numerous and; beautiful bouquets of choice flo Avers! tastefully arranged by the young lad- \ ies of the district. Lollies Avere pi-o-vided in abundance, also cooling drinks Avhich Avere gladly Avelcomed by the thirsty dancers. The non-dancers en" joyed themselves in their own quiet way with a game of cards. Before separating,. Mr, Clarke proposed a vote of thanks t> the crew of the Rose Casey for the splendid entertain ment given, the. proceeds of which Avith the f^es charged for the hire of the piano since the accounts were last made up, would nearly place the instrument out of debt. This Avas carried Avith an ovation of applause. Mr. Whirbutn, on behalf of the crew in a neat speech returned thanks, and said what they had done, they looked upon it as a pleasure as well as their duty, also thanking; all those who had assisted in making the social such a success. Special mention should bemade of Mrs. McCmdy who drove over from Warkworth to assist in the
j musical part of the entertainment, the i same lady having assisted at the ( James Darroch. concert at Matakaaia*
the previous evening, and intended taking part in a concert for the same object at Warkworth, the followingevening. The total proceeds, £5 Bs., were handed over to the piano Fund. The crew provided everything at their own expense with unbounded generosity, and were untiring in attending to the wants of everyone, and siich kindness will not soon be forgotten
