Bear Sir,—Boeing nn article in your paper entitled ''T<^a Versus Beov." In that article I should say Mr. Charrington attributes his health and long lifo to the virtues of beer, and as this is misleading to the g'ener:al public, I should like to say a few •words on the matter. In the first place the chemical analysis of beer show a large per eentage of water, a lesser per eentfga of alcohol and very little solids. {Seemg1 such is the ease, I should say that this is a delusion as there is no strength in it. Men have ! long believed that these drinks are c <sential to their health and happiness; j medical find other testimony to the i •contrary. Baron Liebi.u says: Beer, ' vine, spirits, etc., furnish no eliment j ■capable of entering into the composition oE tho blood, muscular fibre, or any r:p.rt "which is the seat of the vital principle, Se-en hundred and thirty j gallons of the best Bavarian beer contains as much nourishment as a five pound loaf of bread or three jjoinds of beef,-Chief Justice Coleridge say*: "lean keep no terms with a vice that fills our gaols —that destroys •the.comfort of homes and the peace of families, ai*d debases and brutolises the people of these islands, " Far jhence be ba«chus gill." . The Chief -rejoined i " Inflamed wine pernicious to mankind, unnerves the limb?, and dulls the noble mind ; let chief s abstain amd spare the Sacred Jus-ice to sprinkle io the OodSj its better use,*' I remain, Your &c.
