la presenting the first i«sue Of the RODNEY AKD OTA.JIATEA times.to om- readers and the public of Waitomata, Bodney, and Otamatea Counties, we "feel that we are entering upon a venture,in which jpe will be accorded a welcome by all the intelligent portion of the whole district, and we arc especially encouraged by the liberal support extended to us, fijom a practical standpoint. Particularly the number of subs&B>ei*s being in excess of our anticipations, and we take this opportunity of thanking all those, who "have rendered us much valuable assistance in establishing the paper throughout tlie district. Trusting that they, and the public will not be slow to-ap-preciate a jourml, and the advent of the PEESS in their midst which will have tiie courage to run in a free outspoken, and independent nature. Not caviling to any section of class, for if the humble lad in the district merits a push along the path of life and it happens to be in our power to do it. we will.
In dealing with local, and broader politics we will consider it our duty to ciiticise the actions of all public bodies! and on matters public; We will criticise individually when'necessary, so so as to bring faithfully before the public, such matters as may require "light" thrown upon them, and aboye all to ventilating any just grievance that may call for our assistance.
To this end we throw our columns open to our readers, buti must impress upon them the necessity of brevity.and we will endeavour to forward the cause of all local institutions. Keep a keen eye upon the requirements
and noecjs of the y^mti MMrht and assist our parliamentary repjagsentatiye (of whatever colour) to bring before #i# government sucli requirements, and we may here state,that we a?G no party politicians, but will 4eal with jtfEABT;SEs according to tlieir. merits or otherwise, j It will also bp the duty of this journal to keep its readers feed in all points of matter that wijl be of interest or value to the district and the success of' :he settlers in genial. We intend to devote considerable space to farming matters ! or the guidance of farmers in :his district and adjoining settlements, The cable news will be as up to date as possible and local news will be gi^ ftp d rosmß in a fair and unbiased manner^ and for the convenience of country subscribers, accurate reports will be published of all shipping news, auction sales and reports of both the Auckland and local markets. As we recognise that the future prosperity of the district and the Setftog, is in a measure bound up mtj* our own, we cordially invito {jyeryone who has any interest in its welfare, to te^iter u# any assistant which may be for ou* mutual advantage und trust that on* united efforts will ultimately teiid to more progressiveness and unity and also cement a bond of good f ealing, reoipiocity and confidence, between the public and the "fourth. estate" particularly ourselyes;— "The Itodney and Otamatea lAmeiaw a&d Waitemata Gazette.
