Overhanging Tree During the past few days many complainfs have heen reeeived from pedestrians that the large and venerable tree outside the Government
Tourist Department's offiees has> been allowed to grow its beard too long. A branch overhanging the pavement is now less than six feet above the street level, and causes inconvenfence to preoccupied pedestrian's who do not happen to see it and duck in time. Hawke's Bay Artists' Tour A concert party which is to tour the Dominion in the near future is to in- ! clude two Napier artists. They are ! Miss Marie Gananway, pianist, and | her hrother, Master Tom Gannaway, i wh0 is regarded as a violinist of con-- , siderable talent. Miss Renais Gage, ' Hastings, mezzo-soprano, will also | travel on this tour. The object of' the i tour is to give opportunity for tal- | ented young New Zealanders to be | presented to the -public. i Rabbit-Proof Gate Removed • G 1 Use of the rabhit-proof gate on the | Mokau River Bridge is to be disconj tinued, aceording to ^dvice reeeived 1 from the Department of Agriculture ! by the North Taranaki Federated , Farmers' organisation, which made . representations for its removal. The ' directof of the live stock division, Mr. ■ W. C. Rotorua Swimming Reps. The National senior swimming championships are being held at Nelson next week, and Rotorua is to be represented by two swimmers, D. Branch and Miss G. Rogers, both members of the Ohinemutu- Club. D. J. Ewert, of Rotorua, was selected by the South Auckland centre as their representative in diving events but, unfortunately, he cannot make the trip. Branch has been doing good times recently, and should make a good showing in haekstroke events. Hawke Cup Challenges The Manawatu Crieket Association's acceptance of two further challenges for the Hawke Cup this season has been altered to allow for challenges -to he met from Southern Hawke's Bay on March 6, 7 and 8, and Hawke's Bay on April 5, 7 and 8. Previoasly one of'these challenge matches had been allotted to Nelson. Manawatu, aceording to advice reeeived from the New Zealand Crieket Council, had no authority to accept a challenge from. Taranaki in January, as Taranaki was not then next in line for a challenge.

There will follow a tent-pitching competition be- ! tween representatives of the fonr ' j Houses, after which the visitors will j be entertained at afternoon tea and j the ceremonial lowering of the flag at j 5- p.m. will officially close barracks I week. i Janie Seddon As a Trawler The Jane Seddon, a ship with a long j if not exciting history, is to leave her jfamiliar berth at Queen's Wharf, Wellington, to-day. Since December last ! year she ha« been the property of the | Motueka Trawling Company, which I bought her from the War Assets j Realisation Board. On Wlednesday the | Janie Seddon finished her marine surj vey, and only few repairs remain to he done before she sails. At Motueka she will be converted into a trawler and the new owners do not expect that she will he finished refitting inside two months. Athleties and Games 'Films During the holding of the Rotorua High School barracks, films have heen loaned to the Cadet Battalion by the U.S.A. Legation, the A.E.W.S. and the physical branch of the Education Department. Parents, old pupils and members of associated sporting bodies are invited to attend a screening tomorrow night at 7.30 o'clock of "Hurdles and Relays," . "Jumps and Vaults," "Crieket," and "Ameriean O.utdoor Basketball." The last-named film has been shown only four times in New Zealand. If it is wet to-morrow night the film will be shown at the Majestic Theatre on Sunday at 8 p.m., wh'en the same invitation is extended.
